Dr. Enno Maessen is an Assistant Professor of Political History at Utrecht University. He specializes in urban history, modern Turkey, social movements, and politics of representation. His research focuses on the Eastern Mediterranean region during the second half of the twentieth century.

Dr. Maessen earned his PhD in Humanities from the University of Amsterdam (2019) and holds a Research Master's degree Cum Laude from Utrecht University (2012). He was an exchange student at Bogaziçi University's History Department (2011).
His research explores Istanbul's urban transformation, with a focus on Beyoğlu and Tarlabasi districts. He examines how international institutions, cultural communities, and political narratives shape urban spaces. His work also addresses Turkish national memory construction and Ottoman legacy interpretation.
Publications include the monograph Representing Modern Istanbul (2022) and articles in journals such as Patterns of Prejudice, Middle Eastern Studies, and Urban History. His work reveals trends in analyzing urban geopolitics, cultural memory, and historical continuity in Mediterranean cities.
