Enid Schatz

Dr. Enid Schatz is a Professor in the Department of Public Health and Associate Dean of the MU Graduate School at the University of Missouri. She holds additional roles as Core Faculty in Women’s & Gender Studies and Faculty Fellow at the Middleton Center for Race, Citizenship & Justice. Her expertise lies in sociological and demographic research addressing public health challenges, particularly the social impacts of HIV/AIDS on older Africans and gender dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Schatz has held prestigious fellowships, including a Fulbright Scholar appointment at the University of Western Cape (2017). She earned her Ph.D. in Demography/Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania (2002).

Research & Grants: Her work focuses on aging, HIV/AIDS, and qualitative/quantitative method integration. Recent grants include leading the Transforming the University of Missouri for Equity project (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2022–2023) and co-investigating HIV stigma interventions in South Africa (Brown University Center for AIDS Research, 2023–2024). She has contributed to over 60 publications analyzing HIV’s sociostructural effects, pandemic response strategies, and aging populations.

Teaching: Dr. Schatz teaches courses such as Global Public Health Evaluation and Graduate Feminist Methods, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. She also serves as a coach with the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity, supporting academic mentorship initiatives.

Awards & Affiliations: Honors include Wits Research Council and Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships (2002–2004). She maintains research ties with institutions like the University of the Witwatersrand (Honorary Senior Researcher) and the University of Colorado’s Institute of Behavioral Sciences.
