Prof Brian Houle is a Professor in the School of Demography at the Australian National University (ANU) and holds an Associate Professorship at the University of the Witwatersrand. His research focuses on population health disparities, maternal and child health, aging, and HIV/AIDS impacts in sub-Saharan Africa. He completed a PhD in Sociology at the University of Washington and an MPH in Public Health at Boston University.
Research interests emphasize population dynamics, mortality patterns, and the intersection of social factors with health outcomes. His work employs longitudinal cohort studies to analyze behavioral and health trajectories. Recent studies investigate HIV prevalence among older adults in Africa and wealth inequality mechanisms.
Registered to supervise research students, Houle collaborates with institutions like the University of the Witwatersrand and leads initiatives such as the Population Lab (Poplab). Key projects include 'HIV after 40 in rural South Africa' and 'Delivering Anindilyakwa data governance,' focusing on aging with HIV and Indigenous data sovereignty.
