Enette Larson-Meyer is a Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise at Virginia Tech. She holds leadership roles as Director of the Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (MSND) Program and Director of the Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism (NEM) Lab. Her research focuses on how nutrition and exercise influence health, with special emphasis on energy metabolism, vitamin D, and iodine. She has held academic positions at the University of Wyoming and Pennington Biomedical Research Center, and her work spans clinical dietetics, sports nutrition, and metabolic research. Key awards include the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Medallion Award (2022) and the CV-Well Distinguished Scholar Award (2022).
Education: PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1998), M.S. in Clinical Dietetics from Massachusetts General Hospital (1990), and B.S. in Dietetics from the University of Wyoming (1987). Her career includes roles as a postdoctoral fellow, sports nutritionist, and research dietitian at the NIH. She has co-directed interdisciplinary programs in reproductive biology and served as an adjunct clinical faculty member.
Research interests include healthy weight gain strategies for athletes, iodine and vitamin D status in exercise performance, and low energy availability in athletes. Her lab (NEM Lab) explores these topics through studies on bone mineral density, thyroid function, and metabolic health. Recent publications address vitamin D awareness, RMR ratios as energy markers, and plant-based diets.
Awards also include the UW Agriculture Experimentation Station Outstanding Research Award (2018) and the Dannon Mid-Career Nutrition Leadership Award (2016). She actively engages in academic presentations on sports nutrition, thyroid health, and vegan diets in athletics. Her work bridges clinical practice, research, and education across diverse populations, including athletes, postpartum women, and individuals with diabetes.
