Dr. Emrullah Akcan is an Associate Professor at Gaziantep University's Nizip Faculty of Education, Department of Basic Education. He has served as an academic since 2018 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2023. Currently, he also holds the position of Institute Deputy Director (2023-2026) and previously served as Head of Department (2019-present).
Dr. Akcan's educational background includes a PhD in Class Education from Istanbul University (2014-2018), a Master's degree in Class Education (2010-2013), and a Bachelor's degree in Basic Education with a focus on Class Teaching (2006-2010). Before his academic career, he worked as a teacher/administrator at the Turkish Ministry of National Education from 2010 to 2018.
His research focuses primarily on Life Studies Education, Multicultural Education, Inclusive Education, and Education for Migrant/Refugee Students. His work examines culturally responsive teaching practices, social justice in primary education, textbook analysis, and the integration of refugee students into Turkish classrooms. He has published extensively on these topics, with numerous books, book chapters, and journal articles.
Dr. Akcan's recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on multicultural and inclusive approaches in primary education, with particular attention to the Turkish context and the challenges of educating diverse student populations, including refugee and migrant children. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical classroom applications.
Among his notable contributions are several books including 'Göç, Kültür ve Tarih' (2024), 'Kaynaştırma ve Genel Eğitim Sınıflarında Sınıf Yönetimi' (2022), and multiple book chapters on life studies curriculum development and multicultural education.
As an educator, Dr. Akcan supervises numerous graduate students (12 theses listed), teaches courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and serves as editor for several academic journals including 'Journal of Elementary Education: Theory and Practice' and 'International Review of Migration and Refugee Studies'. His undergraduate teaching includes courses on Life Studies Education, Inclusive Education, and Teaching Turkish to Diverse Learners, while his graduate courses focus on Culture-Based Life Studies Education, Research Methods in Migration Studies, and Statistical Data Analysis.
