Emre Turer, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center, affiliated with the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases. He specializes in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease. His research focuses on identifying genes involved in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and understanding mechanisms underlying intestinal inflammation. He completed his medical and doctoral degrees at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, followed by residency and fellowship at UT Southwestern through the Physician-Scientist Training Program.
Dr. Turer's work has led to significant contributions in immunology and gastroenterology, with publications in high-impact journals like Nature Communications and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In 2020, he was awarded the Lancaster Family Chair of Gastroenterology. His lab, part of the Center for Genetics of Host Defense, uses experimental approaches to study intestinal immune homeostasis, combining molecular, cellular, and genetic techniques. Key research areas include endosomal TLR signaling, protein interactions (e.g., A20, Retriever-SNX17), lipid metabolism, and the role of genetic mutations in metabolic and inflammatory diseases.
Dr. Turer collaborates extensively, contributing to tools like the Candidate Explorer for genetic mutation analysis and advancing methodologies such as forward genetic screening. His interdisciplinary approach bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to translate findings into therapies for IBD and related conditions.
