Emre Gönen

Emre Gönen is an academic at Istanbul Bilgi University where he serves as Rector's Advisor and previously directed the MA Programme in European Studies for 12 years. His teaching focuses on European history, EU integration processes, 19th-20th century diplomatic history, French political history, and European political economy.

Educational background includes a PhD in Sociology/Social Anthropology from Paris Descartes University and postgraduate studies in EU integration at Free University of Brussels. Prior to joining Bilgi University, he served as Secretary General of the Economic Development Foundation (IKV) for seven years.

Teaching and research interests include:

• Historical development of European institutions
• Comparative European political systems
• Transatlantic relations
• EU-Turkey relations

Since 2014, he has contributed political commentary through weekly columns in Daily Sabah. Academic collaborations include co-direction of the double-degree European Studies program with the University of Viadrina (Germany).
