Emmanuelle Charpentier serves as Director of the Department of Regulation in Infection Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology (Max Planck Society) in Berlin, Germany, while maintaining a visiting professorship at The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) affiliated with Umeå University. Her pioneering research in bacterial defense mechanisms has established foundational principles for modern genome engineering.
Charpentier's work centers on CRISPR-Cas9 systems, investigating their molecular architecture and regulatory functions in bacterial immunity. Her research spans RNA biology, gene expression control, and pathogen-host interactions, with transformative applications in precision medicine and biotechnology. The department she leads focuses on unraveling infection biology through structural and mechanistic studies of nucleic acid-targeting enzymes.
Her scientific contributions have been recognized with the highest international honors:
- Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2020) for developing CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing
- Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences
- Kavli Prize in Nanoscience
- Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize
Charpentier directs the Regulation in Infection Biology department at the Max Planck Institute, where her team investigates CRISPR systems' evolutionary origins and molecular mechanisms. Her collaborative work with MIMS in Sweden fosters international research in molecular infection medicine, bridging fundamental bacterial genetics with therapeutic applications.
