Emmanuelle Charpentier is a Professor of Microbiology and Honorary Professor at Humboldt-Universität, Berlin. She serves as Founding Director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens and Scientific Director at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology. Her groundbreaking research on CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology revolutionized life sciences, enabling precise DNA modification for applications in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. Charpentier’s work has earned prestigious international recognition, including the 2018 Berlin Science Prize.
Her research focuses on bacterial immune systems, pathogen-host interactions, and the mechanistic basis of microbial pathogenicity. Beyond academia, she co-founded CRISPR Therapeutics and ERS Genomics to commercialize CRISPR-Cas9 applications. Controversies surrounding CRISPR-Cas9 include ethical debates on genetic engineering in humans and regulatory challenges in agriculture.
Awarded multiple honors, Charpentier remains active in advancing CRISPR technology while leading research into bacterial pathogens at her Max Planck institutes.
