Emma Young is a Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde, based in the Department of Social Work and Social Policy. She is affiliated with the Centre for Excellence for Children’s Care and Protection (CELCIS) and concurrently pursues a part-time PhD under the UK Economic and Social Research Council’s doctoral training pathway. Her research focuses on youth transitions from care, particularly mothers with care experience, and leveraging evidence to improve policy and service delivery for children and families.
Education:
- Master of Research in Criminology (University of Glasgow, 2013)
- Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Sociology (University of Stirling, 2012)
Research Interests: Emma’s work centers on care leavers’ experiences, parental support systems for those with care backgrounds, and systemic improvements in child welfare. She emphasizes translating research into actionable policy, such as enhancing services for vulnerable families and optimizing interagency collaboration.
Projects: She has contributed to 21 projects, including the Bright Spots Programme Scottish Pilot (2023–2025) and the Voices and Inclusions Project (2023). Her PhD research examines professional responses to mothers in care during pregnancy and parenthood.

- Recipient of the John Sunley Prize (2014)
