Dr Emma Sutton is an Honorary Research Fellow at the School of History, Queen Mary University of London. Her work focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of health concepts, particularly psychological health and childhood in twentieth-century Britain. She is affiliated with the Queen Mary Centre for the History of the Emotions, contributing to the Wellcome Trust-funded Living with Feeling project.
Education:
- Undergraduate in Physics and History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) at the University of Cambridge
- MA and PhD in History of Medicine at University College London (UCL)
Research Interests: Her research explores the history and philosophy of health concepts, including William James’s biographical studies on illness and health, and the intersection of child-rearing practices with psychological health. She bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, linking philosophy, medicine, and religion.
Public Engagement: Co-developed 'Developing Emotions' for children’s emotional literacy, contributed to the comic series Planet Divoc-91 and Surgeon X, and co-created public events like 'The Museum of the Normal' and 'The Walking Dead Immersive Experience'. These projects address societal perceptions of health, normality, and fear.
