Emma Sartwell serves as an Adjunct Professor in Naropa University's Wisdom Traditions Department, teaching undergraduate Introduction to Meditation and graduate MDiv seminars including Capstone Projects, Process Lab, and Spiritual Care Leadership. Her academic foundation combines a 2014 MDiv in Comparative Religion from Naropa with a 2010 NYU Gallatin BA in Art Theory.
Her educational journey reflects interdisciplinary synthesis:
- MDiv, Comparative Religion, Naropa University (2014)
- BA, Art Theory, Gallatin School, New York University (2010)
Sartwell's research examines intersections of somatic therapy, contemplative practice, and wisdom traditions. She investigates how Buddhist philosophy informs modern anxiety treatment, explores Jewish-Yoga syncretism through Torah Yoga, and analyzes digital culture's impact on spiritual authority. Her work consistently bridges academic theory with clinical application in spiritual care.
Publication trends reveal evolving focus from ritual studies (2011-2013) to contemporary spiritual challenges like internet celebrity's effect on yoga teaching (2012) and compassion frameworks (2014). Recent work centers on Buddhist epistemology (2021) while maintaining threads of art-making and retreat practice.
As founder of Somatic Spiritual Counseling, she leads a collective integrating body-based therapies with mindfulness coaching. Her professional trajectory spans Hebrew school instruction, barista work, and meditation teaching, demonstrating commitment to community-engaged spirituality beyond traditional academic boundaries.
