Professor Emma Marsden is a Professor in the Department of Education at the University of York, specializing in second language acquisition and pedagogy. She served as Director of the National Centre for Excellence for Language Pedagogy (NCELP) from 2018 to 2023. Her research focuses on morphosyntax, vocabulary development, and the integration of research into language teaching practices. Key initiatives include the MultilingProfiler tool for lexical analysis and OASIS, promoting accessible summaries of language research.
Education: BA in French and Hispanic Studies (University of Nottingham), PGCE (University of Manchester), MSc in Applied Linguistics (University of Southampton), and PhD in Foreign Language Teaching (University of Southampton).
Research Interests: Exploring how learners process linguistic input, curriculum design, and the role of explicit instruction in language learning. She collaborates extensively with educators and policymakers to bridge research and classroom practice.
Projects: Led projects such as IRIS (repository for language research materials), Gaming Grammar (digital language learning tool), and Language-Driven Pedagogy. She holds editorial roles at Language Learning and contributes to national language education policy.
