Natalie Finlayson is a Research Associate at the Department of Education, University of York, specializing in corpus and cognitive semantic approaches to vocabulary studies in modern Romance and Germanic languages. Her work focuses on developing evidence-based pedagogical tools and methodologies for foreign language education, particularly in creating and evaluating vocabulary resources for intermediate learners of French, German, and Spanish.
Her research includes projects like MultilingProfiler, an online vocabulary profiling tool for French, German, and Spanish, and developing syllabus-aligned achievement tests for GCSE Modern Foreign Language subjects. She collaborates with institutions such as the University of Leeds and the University of Glasgow and is affiliated with the Centre for Advanced Studies in Language and Education (CASLE).
Finlayson’s external activities include membership in the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network, the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL), and its Vocabulary Special Interest Group (VOCAB SIG). She has held roles such as External Examiner for German at the University of Salford and contributed to the NCELP project.
