Emma-Louise Jay is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Brighton, affiliated with the Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics (CAPPE). She leads modules in counselling and psychotherapy, serves as Research Ethics and Integrity Lead (REIL), and was Course Leader for the (Applied) Psychology program from 2021 to 2024.

Her research lies at the intersection of existential psychology, phenomenology, and philosophy of mental disorder. She explores dissociation, psychoanalysis, hypnotherapy, cross-cultural psychology, and psychological trauma in conflict zones—particularly Colombia. She is interested in spiritual experience, German idealism, and critical approaches to psychiatry and education.
Her recent article analyzes the phenomenology of 'social acceleration' and its impact on education in uncertain futures, reflecting her interdisciplinary focus on cultural, psychological, and ethical dimensions of modern life.

Emma currently supervises two PhD students and welcomes interdisciplinary doctoral candidates in existential psychology, dissociation, philosophy of psychiatry, and trauma in conflict contexts. She has led curriculum development and supports ethical research practices across the School. She previously worked in Colombia (2013–2021), contributing to peace-building research and creativity studies.
She is affiliated with the University of Brighton’s Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics (CAPPE) and has contributed to public discourse through a political blog and narrative non-fiction writing.
