Dr. Emma Katz is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Edge Hill University, previously serving as Associate Professor at Durham University and Senior Lecturer at Liverpool Hope University. Her research focuses on coercive control in domestic abuse contexts, particularly its impact on children and mothers. She holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham, alongside an MA (Distinction) and BA (First Class) in Sociology.
Her global influence is evidenced by policy impacts in multiple governments, REF2021 Impact Case Study selection, and awards including the 2022 Clear Path UK 'Cycle Breaker' Award. She advises international bodies like the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and collaborates with governments (e.g., France) and NGOs. Her widely-read 2022 book Coercive Control in Children's and Mothers' Lives has achieved audiobook status.
Dr. Katz leads the Coercive Control and Transforming Practices of Power (CAPUCS) research project (2023-2027) and has advised media outlets including Channel 4's Hollyoaks.
