Dr. Emma Hughes is an Associate Professor in Human Resource Management at the University of Leeds Business School, affiliated with the People, Work and Employment Department and the Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change. Previously, she was a lecturer at the University of Liverpool Management School and holds a PhD in Employment Relations. She serves as an Associate Editor for Employee Relations: The International Journal and Gender, Work and Organization, and is on the editorial boards of Work, Employment and Society and Journal of Management Studies.
Her research focuses on workplace policies, digitalization, working time reduction (e.g., 4-day workweek), diversity and inclusion, and migration. She leads projects such as the CIPD-funded study on front-line managers in HRM (2022–2024) and an ESRC-funded investigation into online retail warehouse work (2022–2025). She also contributes to the Digital Futures of Work Research Centre (DIGIT).
Teaching expertise includes Human Resource Management, Employment Relations, and Diversity and Inclusion. Awards include the CIPD Mick Marchington Grant and Higher Education Academy Fellowship.
