Emma Hertel is a PhD Fellow at Aalborg University's Faculty of Health Sciences, affiliated with the Department of Medicine and Health Technology. Her research focuses on Translational Pain Neuroscience and Precision Health, aiming to personalize pain medicine through multidisciplinary analysis of pain sensitivity, biomechanics, sleep, and psychological factors.
- Education
- 2020–2022: M.Sc. in Translational Medicine, Aalborg University
- 2017–2020: B.Sc. in Medicine with Industrial Specialization, Aalborg University
Her research integrates musculoskeletal pain studies with experimental pain models, examining how sleep disruption, psychological factors, and biomechanics influence individual pain experiences. She employs quantitative sensory testing (QST) to identify predictors of pain progression and treatment efficacy in knee osteoarthritis, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goal for Education through her translational work.
Recent publications (2023–2025) highlight trends in knee osteoarthritis prognosis, sleep deprivation effects on pain sensitivity, and experimental pain models for studying central mechanisms. She actively contributes to multiscale mathematical modeling via the MathKOA project (2022–2027, funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation), which explores predictive frameworks for osteoarthritis progression.
Media engagement includes commentary on tech giants' responsibilities in moderating traumatic online content (2024). Her work has been shared via X (Twitter) and Mendeley, emphasizing societal impact.
