Dr Emma Filtness is a Senior Lecturer (Education) in Creative Writing at the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences, Brunel University London. She is a poet and prose writer whose work explores hybrid and experimental forms, focusing on themes of heritage, migration, work, gender, nature, and place.
- Education: PhD in Creative Writing and MA in Creative and Professional Writing from Brunel University London; BA in English Literature (with Philosophy) from the University of Hertfordshire.
Her research interests include contemporary poetry (especially found, visual, and digital poetics), New Nature Writing, YA and New Adult Literature, and the creative process. She also investigates writing pedagogy, creativity, and the therapeutic applications of writing for wellbeing and community engagement.
In teaching, she leads modules such as Intro to Poetry, Contemporary Poetry, and Life Writing at BA level, and Creativity and Major Projects at MA level. Previously, she taught The Short Story and Genre Fictions.
- Responsibilities: Academic PAL (Peer-Assisted Learning) Coordinator for English and Creative Writing; Mental Health First Aid Champion.
She is active in PhD supervision, guiding projects on YA dystopian fiction, biographical fiction, and experimental narratives exploring identity and expatriate experiences. Emma also engages in research on creativity and community through social media platforms like Twitter (@Em_Filtness) and Instagram (@cultofflora).
