Dr Emma Cooke is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Kent’s School of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on legal aid lawyers, occupational cultures, and socio-legal studies. She completed her PhD in 2020, funded by an Economic and Social Research Council Scholarship, examining the impact of austerity on legal aid practitioners. Currently, she collaborates with Cardiff University on post-pandemic access to justice in criminal, family, and social welfare contexts.
Dr Cooke teaches core modules such as SO305 (Introduction to Criminology) and SO536 (Criminal Justice in Modern Britain). Her publications explore legal aid systems, socio-legal dynamics, and ethnographic methodologies. An upcoming book, The hidden world of the legal aid lawyer: upholding the heart of justice, is set for 2025 with Bristol University Press.
