Emma Christensen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Arts at Roskilde University, Denmark, specializing in interdisciplinary research bridging communication, sociology, and organization studies. Her current work focuses on artificial intelligence and local food systems within two major active projects: 'Organizing REKO' and 'SCAI: Strategizing Communication and Artificial Intelligence'.
Her educational background includes a PhD from Uppsala University, a Master's in Strategic Communication from Lund University, and a Master's in Social and Cultural Analysis from Linköping University.
Research in Artificial Intelligence examines sociotechnical imaginaries, modern myths, and socio-environmental impacts through social science lenses, emphasizing the greening of AI practices. Her Local Food Systems research investigates the Reko network as a viable alternative to industrialized food systems via the international 'Organizing Food' project.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal dual thematic dominance: AI studies explore organizational dynamics of AI adoption and sustainable implementation, while food systems research analyzes place-making in alternative economic networks. Both strands demonstrate strong interdisciplinary methodology connecting theory with societal challenges.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Thesis award (2011)
- Top Faculty Paper Award (2022)
Christensen actively supervises students in public relations, strategic communication, and AI-related fields while leading externally funded projects. Her 'Organizing REKO' project (2023-2026) examines local food viability across Finland, Sweden, and Latvia, and 'SCAI' (2022-2025) investigates AI communication strategies in organizational contexts.
She contributes to the Artificial Intelligence and Datafied Communication (AIDa) research ecosystem and collaborates with Scandinavian institutions through the Organizing Food project network.
