Emily Zackin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University, part of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. She holds a PhD from Princeton University, where her dissertation earned prestigious awards for its analysis of state constitutions and positive rights in the US. Her research focuses on American politics, constitutional law, and the historical development of rights in state constitutions, including education, labor, and environmental rights.
Her book Looking for Rights in All the Wrong Places: Why State Constitutions Contain America’s Positive Rights (2013) examines movements to enshrine positive rights in state constitutions. Recent work explores debt relief, judicial politics, and constitutional design. She has published widely on topics such as judicial discretion, comparative constitutionalism, and the interplay between law and social movements.
