Emily Ruth Rutter is an Associate Professor of English and Associate Dean of the Honors College at Ball State University, with affiliate roles in Women's, Gender, and African American Studies. Her research interrogates race, gender, and media through literary and cultural analysis, focusing on counterstories to dominant narratives. Notable works include White Lies and Allies in Contemporary Black Media (2023) and Black Celebrity: Contemporary Representations of Postbellum Athletes and Artists (2021).
Rutter’s scholarship spans monographs, edited collections, and peer-reviewed articles in journals like African American Review, MELUS, and Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature. Her co-edited volumes include Revisiting the Elegy in the Black Lives Matter Era (2020) and the forthcoming Black Saturation: Selected Works of Stephen E. Henderson (2025).
Her awards include the 2022 Joe Weixlmann Prize Mention and 2015 Jerome Stern Award.
