Ruth Nicole Brown is a Professor and the Inaugural Chairperson of the Department of African American and African Studies at Michigan State University. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Michigan, with certificates in World Performance Studies and Gender and Women’s Studies. Her work centers on Black girlhood, hip hop feminist pedagogy, and performance-based activism. Brown founded Saving Our Lives, Hearing Our Truths (SOLHOT) in 2006 to celebrate Black girlhood through community engagement. She also leads Black Girl Genius Week (BGGW), a program expanding SOLHOT’s impact across multiple locations since 2014.
Her research emphasizes radical creative power and praxis, blending academic and artistic mediums. Brown is a co-founder of the band We Levitate, merging performance with activism through works like The Mixtape Remix and Check In!. Current projects include explorations of Black girlhood and nature.
Brown has received the Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Fellowship (2019-2020) and grant support from The Novo Foundation and campus initiatives. Her scholarly contributions include two books, Hear Our Truths: The Creative Potential of Black Girlhood (2013) and Black Girlhood Celebration: Toward A Hip Hop Feminist Pedagogy (2009), as well as co-edited volumes on qualitative inquiry and hip hop feminist pedagogy.
