Emily McGowan is an Assistant Professor of English at Bryan College, where she teaches courses in English and writing. Her research and creative work spans disciplines such as 20th-century literature, rhetoric, Southern Gothic and speculative fiction, and cultural studies of Old Hollywood, folk music, and fashion history.
- Educational Background: M.F.A. in Writing (Savannah College of Art and Design), B.S. in Western Legal Traditions (Liberty University)
McGowan’s creative writing focuses on dystopian narratives and literary citizenship. Her M.F.A. thesis novel Protogeist is under submission to literary agents. She has also published with Causeway Lit and Atwood Magazine, and volunteers with the Savannah Book Festival.
Her film August, a WWII homefront story about a German POW in rural Georgia, has won multiple awards, including Best Picture at the Bay International Film Festival and Best Student Short at the Independent Shorts Awards. She is currently submitting her next script, No Solicitation, to festivals.
McGowan emphasizes the importance of literary engagement and has professionally edited diverse projects since 2017. She resides in Dayton, Tennessee, with her husband Eli (a co-screenwriter and director) and two daughters.
