Emily Jo Schwaller serves as an Assistant Professor of Practice and Assistant Director of Writing Across the Curriculum at the University of Arizona. She supports faculty in developing inclusive assignments, implementing writing pedagogy, and integrating artificial intelligence into curricula while co-directing the Antiracist WAC Faculty Fellows initiative to advance linguistic justice.
Her educational background includes:
- B.A. in English-Writing Studies from Montana State University
- M.A. in Rhetoric and Composition from North Carolina State University
- Graduate Certificate in College Teaching from the University of Arizona
- Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English from the University of Arizona
Dr. Schwaller's research focuses on writing instruction at Hispanic-Serving Institutions, exploring AI's role in education and developing antiracist frameworks for linguistic diversity. Her work emphasizes creating inclusive assessment methods that honor multilingual student identities while advancing composition theory through practical classroom applications.
Recognized as a CUES Distinguished Fellow, she leads campus-wide initiatives through the Writing Across the Curriculum program, collaborating with the Writing Center, University of Arizona Library, and Coalition of Writing to strengthen institutional support systems. Her current projects include faculty development workshops on AI-integrated writing assignments and expanding the Antiracist WAC Faculty Fellows program to transform departmental writing practices across disciplines.
Outside academia, she actively participates in Tucson Masterworks Chorale, pursues birding, and cares for two cats while maintaining professional engagement through Twitter and educational development networks.
