Dr Emily Hotchkiss is a Lecturer in Farm Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Glasgow. She holds a PhD from Liverpool Veterinary School and has prior research experience at the Moredun Research Institute. Her work focuses on epidemiology of livestock diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and behavioral aspects of farmer decision-making in veterinary practices.
Education includes graduation from Glasgow University Vet School (GUVS) in 2000, followed by mixed and farm animal practice experience in Oban and Lanark. Her research combines molecular techniques with social science approaches, addressing issues like Cryptosporidium genotyping, parasite control strategies, and public health implications of livestock practices.
Key research themes include:
- Epidemiology of endemic livestock diseases
- Antimicrobial usage patterns in dairy farming
- Socio-psychological factors influencing farmer behavior
- Waterborne pathogen surveillance (e.g., Cryptosporidium, Toxoplasma)
Her recent work (2023) analyzes Scottish dairy farmers' attitudes toward antimicrobial resistance, while earlier studies (2015-2017) focused on parasite control in sheep and molecular diagnostics for Cryptosporidium.
Grants include funding from the Hannah Dairy Research Foundation (2023-2025) for colostrum status research and a High-resolution molecular approaches grant for Cryptosporidium transmission studies.
