Dr. Emily Heil is a Professor in the Department of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She also serves as Pharmacy Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Heil holds advanced credentials including PharmD, MS, FIDP, BCIDP, and AAHIVP. She completed her undergraduate and PharmD at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, followed by pharmacy practice and infectious diseases residencies at UNC Hospitals.
Her research focuses on optimizing antimicrobial therapy, particularly in critically ill patients. Key areas include individualized dosing strategies, gram-negative resistance mechanisms, and improving antimicrobial stewardship practices. Dr. Heil has contributed to national guidelines for treating multidrug-resistant infections and has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications.
Notable recent work includes comparative effectiveness studies of new beta-lactam antibiotics and multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa management. She collaborates with the PRECEDENT Network and leads initiatives like the SPARC (Statewide Prevention and Reduction of Clostridioides difficile) program. Dr. Heil's work bridges clinical practice, education, and policy to address pressing challenges in infectious disease management.
