Dr. Emily Hards serves as a Lecturer and Research Associate in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath. Her academic work focuses on adolescent mental health, particularly depression and self-evaluation mechanisms in young populations. Current research examines how self-perception influences depressive symptoms in adolescents, including those with chronic illnesses.
Her research interests center on adolescent psychology with specific emphasis on depression symptomatology, self-assessment methodologies, and cognitive behavioral approaches. Key areas include the relationship between possible selves and depression, therapist perceptions of adolescent depression treatment, and systematic analysis of self-evaluation patterns in chronically ill youth. Recent publications demonstrate strong methodological diversity spanning quantitative studies, mixed-methods surveys, and systematic literature reviews.
Dr. Hards leads two active research projects: 'Understanding young people’s attitudes towards violence and other frightening events' (2025-2026) and an ESRC-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship on 'Self-evaluation in adolescent depression' (2022-2025). These projects explore posttraumatic stress responses, negative self-evaluations, and depression mechanisms in adolescent populations. Her work contributes significantly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to mental health and well-being.
Her research outputs show consistent publication in high-impact journals including New Ideas in Psychology, Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health. Current projects involve collaborations with researchers across multiple institutions, demonstrating strong external research networks focused on adolescent mental health interventions.
