Lecturer in German at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Emily Goodling teaches German language at all levels and offers seminars on cultural, literary, and political themes. She has also held teaching positions at Stanford University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Hillsdale College, with a focus on integrating technology into literature education and developing study abroad programs in Germany.

Goodling’s research examines evolving conceptions of the political in German theater, particularly the valorization of authenticity in postmigrant performance spaces in Berlin. Her work, supported by Berlin and Mellon Fellowships, addresses the potential and challenges of platforms for underrepresented voices in contemporary German theater.

Her teaching includes advanced courses on German opera history, Thomas Mann’s novels, contemporary theater, and the interplay between literature and politics in 20th-century Germany. At Hillsdale College, she leads summer programs in Germany, teaching advanced politics and culture, and designed an asynchronous literature seminar at Georgia Tech.
