Emily Darlington is a Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at Sonoma State University, bringing more than two decades of experience in the early education field and over twelve years of managing state-level grants and contracts with agencies such as First 5 California, the California Department of Education, and the California Department of Social Services.

Research & Professional Focus
Her scholarly and professional interests center on advancing equitable early learning environments, developing effective early-education workforce pathways, and translating policy into practice through grant-funded initiatives that serve diverse early-childhood settings—from private centers and family child-care homes to Head Start and transitional kindergarten programs.
Across her career she has provided coaching and advising to educators working in Head Start/Early Head Start, First 5 consortia, County Offices of Education, and community-based organizations, ensuring that practitioners are well-prepared to foster empowerment and equity for children and families.
Teaching
At Sonoma State, Darlington teaches courses that bridge theory and practice, including:
