Emily Cousens is an Assistant Professor in Politics and International Relations at Northeastern University London, within the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Politics, IR, Sociology, and Anthropology. Her research focuses on trans feminist philosophy and the history of feminism. She holds a PhD in Political Philosophy from Oxford Brookes University (2020), an MSt in Women’s Studies (2014), and a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and International Relations (2013), all from the University of Oxford.
Her current projects include a second book, Before Trans Feminism: The Sex/Gender Politics of Virginia Prince, and co-editing the Routledge International Handbook of Gender and Sexuality. She previously led the BA/Leverhulme-funded project Second Wave Trans Feminism’s in Print, resulting in her 2023 book Trans Feminist Epistemologies in the US Second Wave (Palgrave).
Teaching responsibilities include leading Intermediate Politics and International Relations Directed Study and Foundations of Critical Thought, alongside courses like Foundations of Western Political Thought and Introduction to Sociology. She supervises doctoral candidate Leila Sellers, whose thesis examines the Beaumont Society’s trans cultures and identities (1966–2004).
Emily is the UK Lead for the Digital Transgender Archive and holds a 2024 Fellowship of Advance HE. Her work has been published in Gender & History, Angelaki, and History Workshop Journal, with forthcoming articles in Sexualities and L’Espirit Créateur.
