Emily C. Rainey is an Associate Professor and co-associate chair at the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading, School of Education, University of Pittsburgh. She coordinates field coaching in teacher education and has a background as a middle school English teacher. Her work emphasizes improving literacy instruction in underserved contexts, blending sociocultural theory with practical classroom strategies.
Her research focuses on three interconnected strands:
- Advancing disciplinary literacy practices across content areas
- Designing effective literacy teacher education programs
- Historicizing literacy education through machine learning methodologies
Rainey’s scholarship addresses deficit discourses and promotes equity through initiatives like human-centered engineering design literacy and culturally relevant historical inquiry. She has been honored with the 2022 AERA Outstanding Reviewers award.
