Emily Bank

Emily Bank is a Research Fellow and Doctoral Candidate at the Institute of Earth System Sciences, Leibniz University Hannover, where she works in the Department of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Since September 2023, she has served as a Research Associate, contributing to research projects including SELINA: Science for Evidence-based and sustainable decisions about natural capital (2022-2027).

Her educational background includes:

• M.Sc. in Landscape Sciences from University of Hannover (2020/21-2023), with thesis on "Agroecosystem condition assessment on the local to regional scale: A multi-criteria approach based on land-use intensity"
• B.Sc. in Geography from University of Hannover (2017/18-2021), with thesis on "Citizen Science Data-based Mapping and Assessment of Demand for the Ecosystem Service 'Local Climate Regulation' in the Munich Area"

Emily's research focuses on ecosystem condition analysis and assessment, particularly in agroecosystems. Her work involves developing frameworks for ecosystem accounting and evaluating land-use intensity impacts on ecosystem services. She is actively engaged in creating standardized approaches for environmental assessment that can inform sustainable decision-making processes across different spatial scales.

Her publication record shows a clear progression in ecosystem accounting methodologies, with her 2025 paper advancing standardized assessment approaches for German agroecosystems and her 2022 co-authored work documenting European progress in ecosystem accounting frameworks. This research bridges theoretical environmental science with practical policy applications for natural capital management.

Emily serves as a board member of the Institute of Earth System Sciences, representing scientific staff. She has gained diverse research experience through internships at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig (UFZ) and the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Conservation and Nature Conservation (NLWKN), complementing her ongoing work as a Student Assistant at the Institute of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology from December 2019 to July 2023.
