Emily A. Partridge, MD, PhD, MHS, serves as an Attending Pediatric Surgeon in the Division of Pediatric General, Thoracic and Fetal Surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and holds an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Her clinical expertise spans general and thoracic surgery, neonatal surgery, minimally invasive techniques, congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) management, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support.
Her educational foundation includes:
- MD from University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine
- PhD in Philosophy from University of Toronto, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology
- MHS from University of Toronto, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology
- General Surgery Residency at University of Toronto
- Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
Dr. Partridge's research pioneers artificial womb technology and extracorporeal life support systems for extreme prematurity and congenital anomalies. Her groundbreaking work on the EXTra-uterine Environment for Neonatal Development (EXTEND) platform demonstrates physiological support for premature lambs, bridging fetal and postnatal physiology. She investigates innovative CDH management strategies, omphalocele complications, and pulmonary hypoplasia interventions with translational focus on improving neonatal survival and outcomes.
Her publication trajectory reveals consistent advancement in neonatal surgical innovation, with 15+ high-impact papers (2014-2019) centered on CDH pathophysiology, ECMO optimization, and artificial womb development. The 2017 Nature Communications paper on extra-uterine support represents a paradigm shift in neonatal care research.
Dr. Partridge actively contributes to CHOP's multidisciplinary programs:
- Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center
- Pulmonary Hypoplasia Program
- Trauma Center
- Esophageal and Airway Treatment (EAT) Program
- GEM Program
