Emilio Sala is a Tenured Associate Professor of Musicology and History of Music at the University of Milan. He is a member of the Academy of Europe (Section: Musicoalogy & Art History) and holds affiliations in Film, Media & Visual Studies. His roles include serving as Scientific Director of the Istituto nazionale di studi verdiani (2012-2014), President of the National committee for the 100th anniversary of Arrigo Boito’s death (2018-2021), and Board member of the WGV (Verdi Works) since 2013. He has been a music consultant for the Palazzetto Bru-Zane (2010-2023) and a member of the Fondazione Rossini's board since 2005.
His research focuses on opera studies, film music, and pre-cinematic listening practices. Notable awards include the 2020 Public Engagement Award for 'Singing the City' and the prestigious Ronga Award (2014). His work bridges musicology with interdisciplinary studies in art history and media.
He has actively contributed to academic governance through leadership roles and editorial boards, including contributions to the Works of Giuseppe Verdi publication series. His career reflects a commitment to both scholarly research and public engagement in music cultural heritage.
