Emanuel Wittberg is a Research Fellow at Linköping University, affiliated with the Institute for Analytical Sociology (IAS) and the Centre for Local Government Studies (CKS), within the Department of Management and Engineering (IEI). His research focuses on corruption risks in welfare states, particularly in Sweden, combining Analytical Sociology methods with statistical modeling to bridge micro-level individual behavior and macro-level societal outcomes. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics and has conducted extensive work on public sector corruption mechanisms, including nepotism, municipal procurement practices, and the implications of municipally owned enterprises.
His research contributions include analyzing land-use changes via remote sensing, the impact of corruption on entrepreneurship, and EU-funded anti-corruption initiatives like the FALCON project. Wittberg also explores electoral dynamics, such as geographic polarization in voting behavior and the role of local parties in voter turnout. His work emphasizes transparency and accountability in governance structures, addressing challenges in both local and national contexts.
Key projects include deliverables for the European Commission on corruption costs and risk indicators, as well as studies on vaccination uptake during the pandemic and renewable energy policy impacts. Wittberg’s interdisciplinary approach integrates sociology, political science, and economics to address systemic vulnerabilities in democratic institutions.
