Dr. Emad Mirmotahari is an associate professor of English at Duquesne University since 2010. He holds roles as the department's internship coordinator, director of the World Literature Minor, and faculty advisor for Sigma Tau Delta. His education includes a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from UCLA (2008), an M.A. in Comparative Literature (UCLA, 2005), an M.A. in History (California State University, Long Beach, 2002), and a B.A. in History (UC Irvine, 1999).
His research focuses on modern African fiction, the African diaspora, postcolonial literature, world literature, and translation studies. He teaches courses on African and Latin American fiction, postcolonial literature, and narratives of displacement. His work explores themes of exile, immigration, and social justice, often bridging literary analysis with community engagement.
Dr. Mirmotahari's publications span peer-reviewed articles in journals like Modern Fiction Studies, PMLA, and College Literature, as well as book chapters and translations. His 2011 monograph Islam in the Eastern African Novel examines religious identity in postcolonial contexts. His recent work (2022-2024) engages with contemporary African authors like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dinaw Mengestu, analyzing themes of race, secularism, and transnationalism.
He actively participates in academic conferences, presenting on topics such as "Modelling World Literature in Hearn's Chita" (2016) and "Aftermaths of Babel" (2019). His teaching philosophy emphasizes global literary frameworks and critical engagement with social justice issues.
