James Draney serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Writing Program at Haverford College, teaching courses including Computing the Self: The Art and Philosophy of Digital Culture (Spring 2025) and Artificial Intelligence and Culture (Fall 2025). He holds a PhD in English from Duke University (2024) and specializes in the intersection of literature, technology, and inner life.
His research examines how data technologies reshape the novel's treatment of private interiority, with a focus on commercial surveillance. Current work centers on his book project A Great Harvest: The Novel Self After Big Data, which analyzes contemporary fiction by Rachel Cusk, Tao Lin, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie alongside media theory to reveal connections between computational concepts (creeping, profiling, doxing) and literary representations of subjectivity.
Dr. Draney's scholarship has been published or is forthcoming in leading journals including PMLA, NOVEL: A Forum on Fiction, and the Journal of Modern Literature. His teaching integrates critical theory with digital culture studies, emphasizing the philosophical implications of emerging technologies.
