Elvin Beach is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University. He specializes in laboratory instruction, materials characterization, and failure analysis, with a strong focus on bridging academic concepts to industrial applications.
- Education: B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering (2000), M.S. in Materials Science & Engineering (2001) from Michigan Technological University, and Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering (2009) from The Ohio State University.
His research interests span general materials science, physical metallurgy, welding and joining techniques, failure analysis, and fracture mechanics. He has developed hands-on laboratory experiences to reinforce core engineering principles and emphasize practical industrial problem-solving.
Elvin has received multiple teaching awards, including the Ralph L. Boyer Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Engineering Innovation and the Mars G. Fontana Award for Outstanding Teaching in MSE (2021 and 2023). He serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention and Associate Editor for Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis.
Elvin coordinates undergraduate student employees, trains teaching assistants, and contributes to the department’s climate and inclusivity committee as a faculty mentor. His teaching philosophy emphasizes safety, accessibility, and contextual learning.
