Dr. Elspeth Mathie is an Assistant Director and Reader in Health and Social Care Inclusion at the University of Hertfordshire's Centre for Research in Public Health and Community Care (CRIPACC), within the School of Health and Social Work. She holds a PhD from the University of Exeter and has over 30 years of research experience focusing on patient/public involvement (PPI), dementia care, aging populations, and healthcare accessibility.
Research Interests:
- Inclusion of lived experience in healthcare research
- Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in health/social care
- Dementia care (young-onset and care home settings)
- Dementia-Friendly Communities
- End-of-life care for older adults
- Physical activity interventions for aging populations

Community Engagement: Collaborates with local groups like AgeUK Dacorum, Stevenage Borough Council, and East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Leads regional PPI initiatives and co-designs feedback frameworks for contributors.
Teaching & Supervision: Specializes in qualitative data analysis, PhD supervision, and training NIHR ARC fellows. Teaches modules on PPI evaluation and patient-centered research.
