Elsa Piersig is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Lakehead University. Her research focuses on the confidence relationship between parliaments and executives, with a comparative lens on Canadian and European parliamentary democracies.
- Ph.D. (2025), Carleton University
- M.A. (2014), University of Calgary
- B.A. (Honours) (2011), St. Thomas University
Piersig's work examines the constitutional and parliamentary foundations of the confidence relationship, analyzing how populist movements and electoral pressures challenge traditional democratic delegation and accountability chains in parliamentary systems. She has studied these dynamics across 28 European and Western democracies.
Her publications, such as her 2016 article on constructive non-confidence in the Canadian Parliamentary Review, reflect a trend of comparative analysis between European and Canadian institutions. This research informs debates about parliamentary reform and the role of the Crown/presidents in maintaining democratic legitimacy.
