Elsa Marziali is a Professor in the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is also a Senior Scientist at the Rotman Research Institute, Baycrest, where she leads innovative research on technology-enabled support systems for caregivers and patients affected by chronic and neurodegenerative conditions.
Her research focuses on the development and evaluation of Internet-based video conferencing programs designed to support family caregivers of individuals with dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic brain injury. Current work extends to improving adherence to rehabilitation in patients with cardiovascular disease, stroke, and Type II diabetes through digital health interventions.
Dr. Marziali is currently developing a caregiver assessment tool that evaluates personal resources and vulnerabilities in family caregivers of persons with dementia. This tool, used alongside functional autonomy ratings of the care recipient, aims to inform tailored home care services that address the health needs of both patient and caregiver. Her work bridges clinical innovation with social work practice, emphasizing preventive and supportive care models.
While no specific publications are listed, her research trajectory indicates strong engagement in telehealth, caregiver mental health, and chronic illness management, with implications for policy and clinical practice.
