Elsa Barkley Brown is an Associate Professor in the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and the Department of History at the University of Maryland. She also holds an Affiliate Associate Professor role in American Studies. Her research focuses on African American political culture with a gender emphasis, including citizenship, visual culture, and Black feminist thought. She is affiliated with the College of Arts and Humanities and is based at 3121 Susquehanna Hall, College Park, MD.
Her research interests explore narratives of Black women's lived experiences, including historical reinterpretations through visual arts and filmmaking. She emphasizes collective work in community-building and the role of storytelling in politics and education. Courses taught include Black Women in U.S. History, African American History, and Black Women's Arts and Culture.
