Elsa Antunes is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the College of Science & Engineering, James Cook University. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering (2018) from JCU and has over 10 years of industry experience, previously serving as Head of Advanced Ceramics Department. Her research focuses on materials engineering, biomedical implants, and sustainable waste conversion through pyrolysis. She leads projects like 3D Printing of Advanced Ceramics and Sustainable Biomass Conversion.
Education: PhD in Chemical Engineering (2018), James Cook University.
Research interests include biochar applications for pollution mitigation, smart materials fabrication, and valorisation of biomass. Key projects include coral propagation via biochar, resource recovery from wastewater, and advanced ceramic manufacturing.
Recent publications (2021–2025) highlight her work in biochar catalysis, biomedical scaffolds, and environmental remediation. Awards include the 2023 Women In Industry Award for Engineering and 2021 Queensland Industry Fellowship. She advises on engineering education committees and has media features discussing ceramic 3D printing applications.
