Dr. Roberto Volpe is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London. His research focuses on pyrolysis, renewable carbons, X-ray imaging, and water remediation. He leads projects in sustainable energy and environmental applications, including the development of biochar-based filtration systems and catalysts derived from biomass. Dr. Volpe is affiliated with the Centre for Sustainable Engineering and teaches modules on chemical reaction engineering and environmental ethics in engineering design.
His research explores thermal decomposition of biomass, synthesis of energy vectors, and catalytic materials for environmental applications. Key areas include in-situ X-ray micro-CT studies of pyrolysis, renewable carbon materials for water treatment, and biomass-derived catalysts for CO₂ conversion. Recent work addresses antimicrobial resistance through biochar filtration and scalability challenges in hydrothermal carbonization.
- Grants:
- £140,000 Jawabutech Ltd grant for biomass energy projects in sub-Saharan Africa (2018–2022)
- £12,000 Royal Society funding for biomass pyrolysis kinetics research (2022–2025)
- Advising: Supervised PhD projects on catalyst design, biochar applications, and biomass pyrolysis mechanisms.
Dr. Volpe collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, including composite materials for biomedical applications and sustainable waste-to-energy systems. His work bridges fundamental research and industrial scalability, contributing to the UK’s energy and environmental sustainability goals.
