Elliot Paul is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Queen's University, within the Faculty of Arts and Science. He holds a PhD from Yale University (2009) and a BA from the University of Toronto. His research spans three primary areas: early modern philosophy (focusing on Descartes and clarity), contemporary epistemology, and the philosophy of creativity. Paul’s work includes a forthcoming book, *Clarity First: Re-envisioning Descartes's Epistemology* (Oxford University Press), arguing that clarity is central to Descartes’ philosophy. He also explores creativity’s philosophical dimensions, including agency, mental health correlations, and artificial intelligence. Paul previously served as a Bersoff Fellow at NYU and an Assistant Professor at Barnard College, Columbia University. His current research leaves include a 2022–23 academic year sabbatical.
Education: PhD (Yale University, 2009), BA (University of Toronto). Research emphasizes clarity, creativity, and historical epistemology. Key publications include *The Philosophy of Creativity: New Essays* (Oxford, 2014) and articles on Cartesian intuition, creativity’s psychological underpinnings, and Descartes’ anti-transparency thesis. His work bridges analytic philosophy, cognitive science, and interdisciplinary approaches.
Publications highlight his focus on Descartes’ clarity, creativity’s cognitive and ethical dimensions, and artificial intelligence’s creative potential. Awards or grants are not explicitly listed, but his cross-joint appointments reflect academic engagement beyond Queen’s.
