L.A. Paul is the Millstone Family Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Cognitive Science at Yale University. Her research focuses on metaphysics, decision theory, cognitive science, and the philosophy of mind. She explores transformative experiences, causation, temporal perception, and self-identity. Paul has received prestigious awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the APA-Lebowitz Prize. Her work has been featured in major media outlets like The New Yorker, BBC, and NPR.
Paul’s current projects include a book on self-construction and transformative experience, under contract with Farrar, Straus and Giroux. She leads workshops on transformative experiences and collaborates with researchers in psychology and artificial intelligence to model self-construction and decision-making.
Her scientific awards include the APA Sanders Book Prize for Causation: A User’s Guide, the Lebowitz Prize, and fellowships from the National Humanities Center and Australian National University. Paul actively engages with public philosophy through podcasts, documentaries, and international speaking invitations.
