Ellen Widder is a Professor of Medieval History at the University of Tübingen's Faculty of Humanities, Department of History, where she has held a permanent position since October 1997. Her academic career spans over three decades with significant contributions to medieval studies.

Professor Widder's research spans multiple dimensions of medieval history, with particular emphasis on political structures, gender studies, and regional development. Her work on the House of Luxemburg explores dynastic networks across Europe, while her research on 'places of power' investigates spatial organization of medieval authority. She has pioneered comparative approaches to urban history and made significant contributions to understanding illegitimacy as a social and political phenomenon in the late Middle Ages. Her current work within SFB 923 'Threatened Orders' examines how dynastic ruptures challenged political stability in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Professor Widder maintains active international collaborations, having served as Visiting Professor at Université Aix-en-Provence/Marseille (2002, 2016) and Belarusian State University of Minsk (2014). She has held leadership roles including permanent delegate of the University of Tübingen to the Philosophischer Fakultätentag since 2005 and German spokeswoman for the Humanities and Social Sciences Division of the German-French Université/Université Franco-Allemand since 2014.
