Ellen Spender is an Associate Professor in the Accounting and Finance department at Swansea University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She serves as a module coordinator for multiple undergraduate and postgraduate modules (e.g., MN-3555 Forensic Accounting, MN-M004 Financial Statement Analysis) and holds the role of Student Engagement Lead for the School of Management. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, her career focuses on learner-centered teaching and student engagement, earning accolades like the 2021 Teacher of the Year Award.
Ellen’s expertise spans Financial Accounting, Forensic Accounting, Corporate Finance, and Financial Statement Analysis. Her research examines pedagogical innovations in online and hybrid learning, student engagement strategies, and the impact of teaching methodologies on educational outcomes. She has published extensively on topics such as game-based learning platforms, note-taking techniques, and intensive block teaching, often collaborating with peers like Robin Baylis and Sue Evans.
She leads grants such as Manual Notetaking to Increase Student Engagement (ALDinHE, 2021–2023) and The Meme-ification of Teaching (ALDinHE, 2022–2024). Ellen also serves as an External Examiner at De Montfort University (2020–present) and contributes to conference organization at ALDinHE and academic societies.
